Labor Day Weekend has certainly been full of fun family events. Friday night we all went to Greenville to have dinner with Phyllis (Latham) and Jerry Dellenger at California Dreaming. After dinner we all went over to Phyllis lovely home and saw some of the family heirlooms that Phyllis inherited from her parents. Some of the posted pictures may be of Nora's furniture which would truly be antiques at this time!
Saturday morning we all gathered at Annette's home, 1790 Boxwood Manor, known as the Lewis-Moorhead home in Sandy Springs, SC (Pendleton address). Annette's friend and former Pastor The Reverend Susie Smith did a wonderful blessing. In that blessing she acknowledged Augustus and Nora Moorhead and their steadfastness and perseverance in their years year on this property. She also mentioned the names of all of the Moorhead brothers and how their lives started here and the contributions they made during their lives.
We sang Amazing Grace, prayed and she read the scripture in Ecclesiastes 3:
"For everything there is a seasonk and a time for every matter under heaven;
A time to be born and a time to die,
A time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to courn, and a time to dance."

This is a very appropriate scripture as this farm has seen great changes over the years. And most recently it was restored to "better than original" condition. This home has again brought the family back together as we worked together to assist Annette in her efforts. Today's blessing on this home and farm begins a new era of family occasions because there was a family member of each of the Moorhead brothers here today. Lewis had no children, but all these photos can represent his efforts to promote family history. Photos were his legacy. All others, Eva, Walter, Fred, Jesse and Jimmie had children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren here today. After a big lunch on the grounds we enjoyed looking at scrapbooks and reviewing old letters that the brothers wrote to each other in WWII. An amazing day! To God be the glory!

First "Official" Tour - Oconee Newcomer History Group

Today was a special day! Annette hosted the first tour group through the house. She did a beautiful and professional job of recapping a very busy year. It still is amazing what all has been done in just a year. The Lord has provided a way for volunteers, workers, archeologists, genealogists, historians, and many others to show up at just the right time to help. Annette has had sustained strength and enthusiasm! Here are some photos of today's group enjoying the house.

Visit with Don Moorhead

Fred, Annette and Jeanie met Don Moorhead, attorney in Greenville, today who spent the day with us inspiring us with stories of our ancestors and of his trip to Ireland. He went to many places and spoke with Moorheads there in 1986 and will be an inspiration as we plan our trip. I'm sure he will help us with our itineray and make some suggestions for the trip we are planning in the next two years. He is a descendent of Alexander Moorhead who is buried near Concord Baptist Church in Anderson along side our great, great, great grandfather/mother, John and Elizabeth Dunn Moorhead. I know some of you have visited their graves as well. Fred and I went by there again today. We also met John and Patty Walker who are restoring a log home much like Annette's in Traveler's Rest, SC. It was a full and fun day!

Everybody notice that I have set it up where you can post pictures of your family and do a profile like Ashley and Ben Moorhead have done! This is going to be fun! At least we'll all know what each other looks like when we pass in an Airport!!

PIANO

PIANO - As most of you know there is an antique piano that has always been in the house. We don't know whose it was or where it came from. Kyle looked up a lot of information on the internet that was very helpful. All we know at this point is what is on the piano itself which is Manufactured by Robert Nunns, Clark & Company, New York. We'll post some pictures on the blog so you can see it. The cabinet is very pretty and Annette found the pedals in the barn so they can be installed on it again. We know Nora was musical and her Dad, Smallwood Jefferson Dalton, taught voice lessons from his wagon traveling from town to town. This may be where some of you get those beautiful singing voices!!

Dear Family ~ We are going to try to meet once a month to stay motivated about how we can assist with the homestead projects! Let us know if you have any ideas.

Fred, Annette and Jeanie met for lunch in Greenville on Thursday and here's what we discussed:

First Goal: To Restore the 1 Acre Cemetery Plot, this acre owns itself and can never be used for anything else; therefore, we need to get it looking good and restore the accuracy of the grave sites already there.
Need ideas on fund raisers: Estimated Cost $500-$1,000
Will contact archaeologist to help us locate displaced grave stones
Plants: native to Upstate Area, using flowers such as annuals, daisies, Iris, coneflowers & daylilies
Garden Bench with herb garden nearby
Soil Analysis results are in and Fred will have CU Professor give suggestions
Need help with a 1 Acre Plan Layout including a roadbed to be graded into this area for easier access and to make it accessible in years to come

ROAD TRIP! Goal for 2010 or 2009 - A Family Trip to the British Isles (Scotland, Ireland and perhaps the Isle of Lewis)
Jeanie and Annette are going to contact 2 different travel agencies to get basic itinerary and cost estimates for us to travel to the origin of our ancestors! Start saving now and making that your vacation for one of the next two years!
